Clemson, SC – Academic All-American Chad Carson, returning quarterback Willie Simmons and women’s track All-American Jamine Moton were among 34 Clemson student-athletes to graduate from Clemson on Friday. The graduation exercises were held on Frank Howard Field at Clemson Memorial Stadium.
Carson graduated magna cum laude in Biological Sciences. The former Clemson linebacker, who led the Tigers in tackles this past year was one of about 30 percent of the graduation class to walk across the stage and receive a diploma individually from Clemson President Jim Barker. He was second on the list of undergraduates to walk across the stage that had been constructed on the field Carson played on for four years. A severe thunderstorm hit the Clemson area at 11:30 AM and cancelled the remainder of the ceremony.
Simmons graduated on Friday, but the group of marketing candidates did not walk across the stage due to the inclement weather. Simmons had to pick up his diploma at a designated location on Friday afternoon. Still, his academic accomplishment was significant. The Clemson starting quarterback for 2002 graduated in just three years and still has two years of eligibility. He is the first Clemson football player in history to graduate that early, breaking the record that had been held by Nick Eason, who graduated the August prior to the beginning of his third year of participation on the gridiron.
Moton graduated with a degree in sociology. . The native of Glassboro, NJ, who also played on the Lady Tiger basketball team during her Clemson career, has been an All-American five times in track. She is a 13-time ACC Champion in throwing events, more than any other Clemson women’s track athlete in history. She was the NCAA runnerup in the indoor weight throw in 2002 and was the NCAA runnerup in the indoor shotput in 2001. She was the ACC Performer of the Year outdoors in 2002 and was named an NCSA All-American by the Strength Coaches Association.
Two Lady Tiger basketball players graduated, continuing the program’s perfect graduation rate for players who stayed for four years. The Lady Tigers earning degrees on Friday were seniors Krystal Scott and Marci Glenney, starters on Clemson’s NCAA Tournament team of 2001-02.
Former Clemson baseball player Billy McMillon received his degree in economics on Friday. McMillon was an All-American for the Tigers under Bill Wilhelm from 1991-93 and had worked on his degree in the off season over the last nine years. He is still playing for Columbus, the AAA farm team of the New York Yankees. He flew to Clemson just for the ceremony on Friday.
