Swimming and Diving Wraps up Regular Season This Weekend

Jan. 31, 2008

The Tigers will swim in their final two meets of the regular season on Friday against Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, NC, and against ACC foe Duke on Saturday at 1 p.m at McHugh Natatorium. The Tigers will honor seventeen seniors at Saturday’s meet, including eleven on the men’s side.

The meet against Gardner-Webb will take place at 6 p.m. in Boiling Springs. The men are 4-7, while the Bulldog women are 13-5. The men’s team is in their inaugural season, while the women are 101-35 in nine seasons. They have won their conference in each of the past four seasons.

The Blue Devils will come to Clemson on Saturday, with the men sporting a 4-5, 0-4 ACC record and the women sitting at 8-3, 2-2 ACC. This will be the Tigers final test before ACC Championships at the end of the month.

The Clemson men are coming into the weekend at 10-2, 5-2 ACC, while the women (6-7, 2-5 ACC) are coming off of a one-point loss at the hands of #20 Florida State. The women are currently sitting on 199 all-time wins, and a win against either opponent would be the 200th in program history.

Head Coach Chris Ip is also one win shy of 50 on the men’s side. Them men’s 10 wins are already third best in Clemson history and an 11th would tie them for second best. Should the Tigers win twice this weekend, they will be in second place. A win against Duke would give the Tigers the most ACC wins in a season in Clemson History. As of right now, both of the Tigers losses are to top-15 teams Virginia and North Carolina.

The Tigers will then be out of the water until the ACC Championships. For the women, they take place Feb. 20-23 at the Georgia Tech Aquatic center in Atlanta, while the men will compete in the same facility from Feb. 27-Mar. 1.
