Stephenson Qualifies for US Women's Open

Clemson, S.C.—Clemson golfer Lauren Stephenson shot a three-under-par 69 in her second round of the day and qualified for the 2016 United States Women’s Open.    The women’s national championship conducted by the USGA will be held July 7-10 at CordeValle in San Martin, Calif.

Stephenson was one of two qualifiers from the Carolina Trace Country Club course in Sanford, N.C. on Wednesday.  Sixty-four women were in the field that would play 36 holes in the qualifier.  Clemson’s stroke average leader had just one birdie shot a 77 in the morning round and was tied for 21st place.

But, Stephenson responded with five birdies and just two bogeys for a 69, the best round of the day by any golfer.

Stephenson just finished her freshman year at Clemson and competed in the NCAA National Championship in Eugene, Oregon last week. She was the first Clemson women’s golfer to play in the event.
