SOS Update: February 2011

March 3, 2011

The Solid Orange Squad has continued to be active in the Clemson community over the past weeks as athletes participated in the Clemson Elementary International Festival on Friday February 11 and Saturday February 12. Student-athletes Sarah Daanen, Deanna Piper, Taylor Sathes, Alexa Rand, Victoria Graham, Rebecca Brown, Maddie Tarantolo and Breanne Przestrzelski participated by helping volunteers at Clemson Elementary with the set of the festival on Friday.

Some of the same athletes returned to work the actual festival on Saturday, while additional athletes came out to work as well. Marco Alcocer, Se Na Kim, Hannah Collins, April Sinkler, Kelly Fowler and Corey Geer attended the festival on Saturday to help and interact with the children.

One student-athlete, Corey Geer of the rowing team, had this to say about her experience:

“The International Festival at Clemson Elementary was a lot of fun to work at. It was a great event for both the kids and the volunteers. The festival was a cool way for the elementary students to learn more about different cultures, as well as where many of their classmates were from.

“During the festival, I worked at the face-painting table. There was a list of countries along with each country’s flag that the kids could choose from. Some kids chose to have their face painted with the flag of their country, but most chose the flags that grabbed their attention (usually the one with the most colors). Although it was not on the list, the Clemson tiger paw was one of the most popular requests.”

SOS will continue to provide opportunities like this for student-athletes in the community in the upcoming weeks.
