Shortstop Jeff Baker Receives Recognition

Oct. 7, 1999

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Jeff Baker, a freshman on the Clemson baseball team, finished second in the U.S. Olympic Committee’s voting for the September Male Athlete of the Month.

Baker, a shortstop, finished second in the voting by one vote to professional tennis star Andre Agassi. Agassi earned the honor by winning the U.S. Open tennis title for the second time in his career.

Baker earned consideration for the award by being named MVP of the 1999 International Baseball Association World Championship Tournament. The native of Woodbridge, VA batted .481 during the tournament and drove in the game-winning runs in the gold medal win.

Baker was a fourth-round pick by the Cleveland Indians in last June’s Major League Draft.
