Second-ranked Clemson pounded out a season-high 17 hits on the way to a 10-5 win over Gardner-Webb in front of 3,570 fans at Doug Kingsmore Stadium Wednesday. The Tigers improved to 11-3, and the Bulldogs dropped to 9-9.
Andy D’Alessio was 3-for-5 to lead Clemson offensively. Herman Demmink, Brad Chalk, Taylor Harbin, Marquez Smith, and Adrian Casanova each added two hits apiece for the Tigers. Blake Lalli was 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double, three runs scored, and four RBIs for Gardner-Webb.
Entering the game on a pitch count, David Kopp (1-0) allowed three runs on one hit and struck out three in 3.0 innings pitched to earn the win for the Tigers. Ben Campbell surrendered seven runs on nine hits in 1.2 innings pitched to take the loss for the Bulldogs, falling to 1-2.
Demmink extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a home run to lead off the game for the Tigers, his first of the season.
Clemson added to its lead in the second with six runs. Travis Storrer singled up the middle to lead off the inning, and went to third on a one-out single through the right side by D’Alessio. Stan Widmann beat out a bunt single that scored Storrer, and Casanova followed with a bunt single of his own that died just inside the third base line to load the bases. Demmink singled through the right side to score D’Alessio and Widmann, and Harbin hit a two-out, two-run double that scored Casanova and Demmink. Tyler Colvin had Clemson’s seventh hit of the inning when he doubled off the fence in center to score Harbin.
Daniel Cooke drew a two-out walk in the third, and Jeremy McCann also walked. Lalli then hit a three-run opposite field home run to left.
Casanova had an RBI single in the third to score D’Alessio, who singled to lead off the inning.
The Tigers added a run in the fifth on a solo home run to left by Smith, his second of the season.
Lalli led off the sixth with his second home run of the day, this time to right-center, his fifth of the season.
Harbin hit his second double of the game to lead off the sixth, and later scored on a single up the middle by Smith.
Lalli doubled to right to lead off the eighth, and scored on a single up the middle by Matt Maloney.
Clemson opens up ACC play Friday at Virginia at 5:00 PM.
