Redman and Pettit in Top 45 after First Round of US Amateur

Clemson, S.C.—Current Clemson golfer Doc Redman, and soon to be Clemson golfer Turk Pettit both had strong first round performances at the United States Amateur at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles on Monday.   Both played 18 holes in the first round of stroke play qualifying and rank in the top 45 of 312 players after the first round. The top 64 golfers after 36 holes will advance to match play on Wednesday.

Pettit, who will enroll at Clemson next week, shot a one-under par 69 on the par 70 course that is 7,284 yards in length and is an annual site of a PGA Tour event.   Pettit shot a two-over-par 38 on the back nine, his first nine of the day, then shot a three under par 31 on the front nine to finish in a tie for 15th place after 18 holes.

Pettit, who went to high school in Auburn, Ala., but now calls Sugar Grove, N.C. home, had birdies on the par four, 509-yard first hole, then par four, 470-yard second hole and the 240-yard par three fourth hole on his way to a 31 on the front side.

Redman, had five birdies in his opening round, but also had four bogeys and a double bogey in firing his 71. Redman made birdie on a pair of 476-yard par four holes on the back, the 12th and 18th holes, but made a double bogey on the 240-yard par three fourth hole. Redman is in a tie for 45th after the first round.

Norman Xiong of the University of Oregon, and Mark Lawrence, a junior at Virginia Tech, hold the first round lead at six under 64.. Xiong defeated Redman in the finals of the Western Amateur 10 days ago.

Redman and Pettit will play Bel Air Country Club on Tuesday.   It plays 500 yards shorter, but has the same par as Riviera.
