Record Number Of Teams Reach 3.0 Mark

A record eight Clemson athletic teams earned over a 3.0 GPA for the spring semester of 2003 according to an academic grade report released by the Clemson Athletic Department on Wednesday. A record 231 student athletes were named to the academic honor roll for the semester.

Student-athletes had a combined GPA of 2.84, second highest for a semester on record behind a 2.85 set in the spring of 2002. Thirty-six student-athletes had a perfect 4.0 for the semester, one short of the semester record of 37 set last spring. One-hundred one student-athletes were on the dean’s list, the fourth straight semester the 100 mark had been exceeded.

Leading the way was the Clemson women’s soccer program, which had a team record 3.42 for the semester. It marked the sixth straight semester that program had exceeded the 3.0 mark. Eighteen of the 25 Lady Tiger soccer players had at least a 3.0, the second straight semester Todd Bramble’s team reached that team record total. Candice Hein, Paige Ledford, Sarah McClurg and Allison Mitchell all made the President’s List for their perfect 4.0 semesters.

Also contributing to the record number of 3.0 teams was the golf team, who had a 3.02 team GPA. Eight of the 10 golfers on Larry Penley’s number-one ranked team had a 3.0 or better, including starters D.J. Trahan, Gregg Jones and Matt Hendrix. Hendrix was named to the Verizon Academic All-District at large team on Monday.

Both Clemson swimming teams had over a 3.0, the second time in history both swimming programs had at least a 3.0 in the same semester. Christopher Ip’s women’s team had a 3.27, while the men were at 3.02. A record-tying 26 Lady Tiger swimmers were on the honor roll. Also reaching the 3.0 mark were the men’s soccer team (3.09), the women’s tennis team (3.20), the volleyball team (3.07) and the rowing team (3.35). Forty-three of the 56 Lady Tiger rowers were on the honor roll and it marked the 10th straight semester that Susie Lueck’s program had reached the 3.0 benchmark.

The Clemson men’s basketball team had a 2.52 team GPA for the semester, second highest by that program since 1987. Six men were on the academic honor roll, including scholarship freshmen Julian Betko, Shawan Robinson and Akin Akingbala. Four Lady Tigers were named to the honor roll, including starting center Amanda White, who made the dean’s list.

The Clemson football team had 25 student-athletes on the honor roll, including Rodney Feaster, Jackie Robinson and Jeff Scott, who all had perfect 4.0 GPAs. Starting quarterback Charlie Whitehurst made the dean’s list.

Other Prominent Clemson student-athletes who were named to the honor roll include rower Emily Kuivila, starting baseball pitcher Steven Jackson, All-ACC men’s soccer player Dimelon Westfield, All-ACC women’s soccer player Heather Beem, women’s swimmer Jenna Burtch, tennis player Sander Koning, All-ACC women’s tennis player Laurence Jayet, cross country regional champion Jason Meany, women’s track All-American Gisele Oliveira, All-Region volleyball player Lori Ashton, and All-ACC diver Craig Thomas.
