Penley's Tigers Seek Record Third Straight Win

Clemson, S.C.—Clemson will attempt to set a school record for consecutive tournament victories when the Tigers compete in the 16-team Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate March 6-7. The tournament will be held at the par 70 Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C.  The teams will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday.

Larry Penley’s team has won its last two events, the Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic in Hawaii in November, and the Puerto Rico Classic on Feb. 20.   No Clemson golf team has won three consecutive tournaments.

Clemson has faired well at the Palmetto Invitational with victories twice in the last five years and two other second-place finishes.   Current Clemson senior Austin Langdale won the event as a freshman.

Langdale and classmate Carson Young will be in the lineup for the Tigers.   It will be the 31st career tournament for Langdale and the 33rd for Young, who were high school teammates in Pendleton, S.C. Young is third on the team in stroke average with a 71.61 average, while Langdale is fourth with a 72.89 average.

Freshman Doc Redman has the top average through six events with a 70.22 figure. He has three top 10 finishes, including two victories and a team best 11 under-par rounds. Bryson Nimmer finished second at the Puerto Rico Classic to lead the Clemson team to an 11-shot victory. Nimmer had a 207 score for 54 holes, his third top 10 of the year.

Freshman William Nottingham will play the No. 5 position after winning qualifying for the final spot. This will be his fifth tournament of the year and he enters with a 74.25 stroke average. He finished third at the Puerto Rico Classic individual tournament in his last start.
