Padgett Wins 60m Dash, Leads Clemson on Friday at Virginia Tech Elite Meet

Blacksburg, VA – Travis Padgett won the 60m dash Friday to pace the Clemson men’s track & field team at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet. The sophomore sensation had an NCAA qualifying time of 6.66 in the final at the Hokies’ Rector Field House indoor facility.

Padgett had the top preliminary time of 6.71, and then posted his 6.66 in the final to hold off A’Tonali Akinkuoutu (6.72) of N.C. State. C.J. Spiller, who owns the top time in the country this season in the event, ran a 6.83 Friday and finished fourth.

Cowin Mills placed third in the 400m invitational after posting a time of 48.53 seconds. Brandon Carter (8.73) and Miller Moss (9.11) competed in the 60m hurdle prelims, but did not advance to the finals of the event.

The distance medley relay team finished eighth Friday with a time of 10:24.57. The Tigers’ lineup was comprised of Tyler Morey, Miller Moss, Travis Swaggard, and Chad Holt. Three members of the team are first or second-year freshmen. Jonathan Sunde was fourth in the 5000m run after posting a time of 15:21.84.

Joey O’Rourke was fifth in the open section of the pole vault after a 14’7.25″ clearance. Mitch Greeley and Chris Spear will compete in Saturday’s invitational section.

The team returns to action Saturday for the final day of competition at Virginia Tech.
