CLEMSON, S.C. – Kyle Wilkie’s RBI groundout in the top of the seventh inning broke a 3-3 tie and lifted Orange to a 4-3 win over Purple in the first of three Orange & Purple Scrimmages at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. Orange took a 1-0 lead in the series, which features three seven-inning contests and marks the end of the fall practice season.
Logan Davidson and Kier Meredith scored single runs in the first inning for Purple. Orange scored two runs in the fourth inning on run-scoring singles by James Parker and Jordan Greene, then Elijah Henderson hit a two-out, run-scoring double in the top of the sixth inning to give Orange a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Purple used its “Shotgun” to load the bases with no outs and scored a run on Davidson’s sacrifice fly to tie the score, then Orange used its “Shotgun” in the seventh inning and took a 4-3 lead on Wilkie’s RBI groundout.
Parker and Henderson, the No. 8 and No. 9 batters in the lineup, respectively, for Orange, combined to go 4-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs.
Sam Weatherly pitched a solid sixth inning to register the win, while Holt Jones pitched a scoreless seventh inning to record the save.
The Tigers play their second of three Orange & Purple Scrimmages at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Friday at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free.
