North Carolina Knocks Off Clemson, 4-1

DURHAM, N.C. – No. 6-seeded North Carolina scored two runs in the first inning and added single runs in the second and fifth on its way to a 4-1 win over No. 3-seeded Clemson in the late first-round game Wednesday night.

The Tar Heels (38-19) had just seven hits but on defense turned two double plays as the Tigers fell to the losers bracket of the ACC Tournament. The Tigers (42-13) scored their lone run in the seventh inning.

Michael Horney, who pitched the first three innings, improved to 3-0 for the Tar Heels and Corey Richardson, who went the final three innings on the mound picked up his fifth save. Also pitching three innings of middle relief was Jay Madiera.

Brian Adams, who fell to 6-1, was the losing pitcher for the Tigers.

Brian Roberts, Jarrett Sharin, Ryan Earey and Richie Grimsley each had an RBI for the Tar Heels. Casey Stone picked up the lone RBI for the Tigers.
