Mitchell to Undergo Surgery

CLEMSON, S.C. — Point guard Shelton Mitchell will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery next week, head coach Brad Brownell announced Saturday. Mitchell will be out four to six weeks, but is expected to return in time for individual workouts during the summer.

“We looked at an MRI last week, and our team physicians think we need to clean his knee up a little bit,” Brownell said. “It’s a minor setback, but it’s the best thing for Shelton in the long term. He’s a talented player, and we know he’ll be ready to go for our skill development over the summer.”

Mitchell was one of Clemson’s top performers this past season, his first as an active member of the Tiger program. The Waxhaw, N.C., native was second on the team with 10.8 points per game and led Clemson with 103 assists. Mitchell ended the season on a high note, posting 11 consecutive games with double-figure point totals. He also showed an improved shooting stroke from his freshman season at Vanderbilt, converting 29 of 64 attempts for a 45-percent mark.

Brownell also announced Saturday that Ty Hudson intends to transfer. Hudson appeared in 41 career games over the past two seasons, scoring 1.6 points per contest.

“Ty would like to find a program that better meets his needs,” Brownell said. “We appreciate what he’s done, and wish him the best in the future.”
