Heat Sheets – Friday
Clemson, SC – The men’s track & field team will host the Clemson Opener this weekend at the school’s indoor facility. The meet, which will span Friday and Saturday, will mark the official begin to the 2007-08 indoor track & field season.
Clemson returns six All-Americans this season, led by 2007 indoor 60m national champion Travis Padgett. He will see action Friday in the preliminaries of the 60m dash. The heats are scheduled to begin at 6:20 for the men. He will be joined by several Tigers in the event, including touted newcomer Trenton Guy of Charlotte, NC.
The action gets started Friday at 5:00 PM. Zach Berg, returning from an injury-plagued 2006-07 season, will lead the Tigers’ entries in the weight throw at that time. Clemson will also field a distance medley relay team at 5:00. At 5:30, a pair of multi-event Tigers will compete in the long jump.
The trials for the 60m hurdles will also be Friday, at 5:40 PM. Mike Feathers and Brandon Carter, a freshman from Shelby, NC, will compete in the event for Clemson.
Saturday’s action gets started at 11:00 AM with the finals for the 60m hurdles. Also starting at that time will be the high jump and shot put. Scott Pauga, a transfer from Illinois-Chicago, will make his debut for the Tiger program in the high jump. Four student-athletes will compete in the shot put for Clemson, including red-shirt freshman Alex Padgett. He is a former high school state champion for South Carolina in the event.
At 12:40 PM, returning All-American Cowin Mills will lead a group of three Clemson athletes in the 400m dash. He was All-America in the 4x100m relay last outdoor season. Mitch Greeley will be the favorite in the pole vault Saturday, as he is a returning two-time All-American and former ACC champion in the event. He is Clemson’s record-holder in the indoor pole vault. The vault will begin at 1:00.
Andrew Porter and Jasen Turnbull are entered in the 800m, which is scheduled for 1:55 PM Saturday. Guy and Padgett will be joined by sophomore Gwantaveus Anderson in the 200m dash at 2:50 PM. Guy was the National Scholastic Indoor Championship winner in the 200m dash as a high school senior last year.
Chris Slate, a freshman from Delaware, will compete in the 3000m run at 3:45 PM. The action will conclude at 4:45 Saturday with the running of the 4x400m relay. Clemson’s team Saturday has been entered as Colin Abercrombie, Corey Brown, Porter, and Mills.
