Men’s Track & Field First After Day One of Clemson Invitational

The Clemson men’s track & field squad is in first place after day one of the indoor Clemson Invitational. The Tigers have 39 points, followed by Charlotte with 38 and Georgia Tech with 28. Greg Isaacs claimed the 5000m run and the Tigers’ distance medley relay team also finished first on day one of competition.

Orlando Brown ran a 7.19 in the 60m prelims to advance to Saturday’s finals. Isaacs finished first in the 5000m run with a time of 14:59.58. Jay Lumpkins of Clemson came home fifth in a time of 15:45.60.

In the 60m hurdles, four of Clemson’s five participants qualified for Saturday’s finals. Leading the way in the event was Ryan Koontz, who posted the second-best overall time in the prelims with a time of 7.95 seconds. It was also the top mark of the season for Clemson in the 60m hurdles. Finishing closely behind were Lydell Perry (8.02), Brent Hobbs (8.09), and Rashad Gardner (8.32). Roy Cheney finished with a time of 9.60.

The Tigers’ distance medley relay team finished first among four schools with a time of 10:10.38. That event was run by Brian Knapp, and Itay Magidi.

In the long jump, Koontz finished fourth with a mark of 22’9.25″, which was a season-best for him. Hobbs was fifth with a leap of 22’8.5″ in that event. Clemson’s lone representative in the weight throw was Danny Alge, who had a toss of 58’9.25″. That marked his best throw of the season and Clemson’s top mark overall this year in that event.

The Tigers return to action on Saturday to conclude the meet. The 60m hurdles, high jump, and shot put will begin competition among the men’s teams beginning at 11:00 AM.
