Men’s Track & Field Concludes Day One at Carolina Classic

Chapel Hill, NC – Chris Spear won the men’s pole vault Friday to highlight day one of action for Clemson at the Carolina Classic. The meet, held at the Eddie Smith Field House on UNC’s campus, will conclude Saturday.

Spear had a clearance of 16’4.75″ and easily outlasted his competitors in the pole vault. He was runner-up in the vault during his last performance two weeks ago at the Clemson Invitational. Joey O’Rourke also competed in the pole vault Friday but did not clear his opening height.

Cowin Mills and Corey Brown placed in the top five Friday afternoon in the 400m dash. Mills clocked a time of 49.37, while Brown crossed the finish line in 49.54 seconds. The sprinters were third and fifth place, respectively. Travis Swaggard (50.21) finished 15th overall for the Tigers.

Josh Fowler finished in third place in the collegiate division of the triple jump Friday. He had a total distance of 46’3.25″.

Alex Padgett competed in the invitational 35-pound weight throw and performed well, finishing fourth overall. The red-shirt freshman had a mark of 54’4″. Stephen White fouled and did not place in the second section of the weight throw.

The first event Saturday for the Tigers will be the 60m hurdle preliminaries at 10:15 AM.
