Men’s Tennis Sweeps Doubleheader

CLEMSON-The Clemson Tigers picked up a pair of victories over USC Upstate and Presbyterian College at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers began the day by picking up a 5-2 victory over the Spartans. Senior Carlos Alvarez clinched the match with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 win in number-three singles over USC Upstate’s Edgar Rodriguez.

“That was a fantastic match with great tennis at a high level,” Head Coach Chuck McCuen said. “The momentum was sort of shifting toward USC Upstate and he shut that down and clinched the match.”

Derek DiFazio, Rok Bizjak, and Kevin Galloway also won singles matches for the Tigers against the Spartans.

The Tigers earned a 7-0 victory in the afternoon match against the Blue Hose. The Tigers did not drop a set in the match.

McCuen elected to play younger players in this one, and they responded. Freshmen Juan Bolona and sophomore Wes Moran all won singles matches against Presbyterian.

Galloway was the only Tiger to win a match in both contests.

“We have a lot of savvy,” McCuen said. “I’m really impressed that I can stress them by playing doubleheaders because not many people do that anymore. These are long days.” The Tigers will be back in action on Tuesday, February 16 as they host College of Charleston.
