ACC Championships Story

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Virginia Cavaliers continue to hold the lead of the 1999 ACC Mens Swimming and Diving Championships after two days of action at the Campus Recreation Center Natatorium. Virginia (468) leads Florida State (435.50) by 32.50 points heading into the final day of competition. North Carolina stands in third with a score of 418. NC State (348.50) is fourth, Clemson (236) fifth, host Maryland (204) is sixth, Georgia Tech (138) is seventh and Duke (91) is eighth.

Florida State captured the 200-yard medley relay, marking the third consecutive year that the Seminoles have won the event. They set the ACC championships meet record with a time of 1:28.37, but fell just short of the ACC record of 1:28.10, set by the Seminoles in 1997. By winning the 200-yard medley relay, Florida State leaped over Virginia into first place following the event.

Doak Finch of Virginia won the 400-yard IM for the third consecutive year with a time of 3:51.22. It was also his second win of the meet. Last night, he won the 200-yard IM for the second straight year. With the win tonight, Finch captured his sixth career ACC title.

Virginias Shamek Pietucha upset the three-time defending champion, Tucker Shade of North Carolina, in the 100-yard butterfly. Pietucha (47.59) narrowly touched out Shade (47.74) for the title. Pietucha went on to become the only double winner of the night as he captured 100-yard backstroke with a time of 48.67.

In the 200-yard freestyle, Florida States Stephen Parry was victorious with a time of 1:36.81. It was Parrys second ACC title in the event in the last three years. He also won the 200-yard freestyle in 1997. It was his third overall ACC career title.

Florida States Brendon Dedekind brought home the crown in the 100-yard breaststroke for the third consecutive year with a time of 53.36. It was his second title at the 1999 championships as he also captured the 50-yard freestyle on Thursday. Dedekind won his ninth career ACC title, just two off the all-time ACC record for titles of 11 set by John Davis of North Carolina from 1988-91.

Dedekind and Virginias Ed Moses (53.55) were both automatic qualifiers for the NCAA Championships.

Florida State closed out the evening by winning the 800-yard freestyle relay, edging Virginia by just 29 hundredths of a second. The Noles finished in a time of 6:33.71 to top the Cavaliers 6:34.00.
