COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Clemson’s men kicked off day one of the Charlie Thomas Invitational with their best time in the distance medley relay of the season on Friday evening in Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium. James Quattlebaum anchored the relay team to a first place finish ahead of Texas A&M, UCLA, Rice and South Plains.
Quattlebaum crossed the finish line at 9:53.74, claiming the 18th fastest time in the country. Terrell Jackson, Oliver Lloyd, Darron Coley joined Quattlebaum in the effort. The women finished third overall behind Rice and Texas A&M as Imani McGowan, Olivia James, Dana Maydew and Katie Fortner combined for a time of 11:53.19.
Erin McLaughlin closed the night for the Tigers with a time of 17:26.55 in the 17:26.55 in her first collegiate 5,000 meter run. The time is just .55-seconds shy of Clemson’s list of all-time best performances in the event as Gail Groulz holds the 10th best time in program history at 17:26.00.
The Charlie Thomas Invitational continues tomorrow, February 4 at 12:30 p.m. Grace Barnett and Logan Morris are also in action tomorrow as Barnett will compete in the 3K at the Armory Invitational at 2:07 p.m., while Morris will try to qualify for Junior Nationals with Team USA at the USATF Cross Country Championships at 3:10 p.m.
