Men’s Basketball Adds Bobby Hussey as Assistant Coach

Clemson, SC – Bobby Hussey, a veteran of 28 years as a college basketball coach, including 20 as a head coach, has joined Larry Shyatt’s Clemson staff as an assistant coach. Hussey has Division I head coaching experience at Virginia Tech and Davidson, and also served as head coach at Belmont Abbey College.

Hussey gained 310 victories as a head coach at the three schools and had six 20-win seasons in his career. This will be his second coaching stint at Clemson. He was an assistant coach at Clemson from 1989-91.

“Bobby Hussey brings a wealth of experience and basketball knowledge to our program,” said Shyatt. “He has long been one of the most respected coaches in the college game and he is a great addition to our staff.”

The 1963 graduate of Appalachian State began his head coaching coaching career at Kings Mountain High School in North Carolina. In his four years (1966-70) he posted an incredible 67-6 record.

From there he moved on to Belmont Abbey as head coach. His last four teams all won at least 20 games, including a 29-5 ledger in 1979-80. Belmont Abbey was 179-111 in his career at the North Carolina based institution, including 96-31 his final four years.

He became a Division I head coach beginning with the 1981-82 season when he was named head coach at Davidson College. Between 1981-89 he led Davidson to 108 victories, including 20 apiece in 1985-86 and 1986-87. Hussey’s first Davidson team defeated a Mike Krzyzewski coached Duke team in Durham, and his second Davidson team defeated a Digger Phelps coached Notre Dame team in Charlotte. His 1985-86 team won the Southern Conference tournament and played in the NCAA Tournament.

Between 1989-91 Hussey served at Clemson as an assistant coach under Cliff Ellis. During the 1989-90 season Hussey helped Clemson to a 26-10 record, including the school’s first ever ACC regular season championship. Clemson advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament behind the play of Elden Campbell and Dale Davis, who were both first-team All-ACC players that year.

From 1991-97, Hussey was the top assistant to former Clemson head coach Bill Foster at Virginia Tech. The Hokies won the NIT Championship in 1995 and won the Atlantic 10 Western Division in 1996. That Hokie team posted a 23-6 record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

In 1997-98, Hussey succeeded Foster as head coach at Virginia Tech, a position he held for two seasons.

Hussey is married to the former Sandra Dwiggins of Kannapolis, NC and they have two sons, Bo and Greg.
