Andy McPherson has been named an assistant athletic trainer at Clemson, Director of Sports Medicine Danny Poole announced. He will work with the men’s basketball team on all of its athletic training needs. He comes to Clemson after spending the last eight years as the head athletic trainer at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia.
In 2011, McPherson was promoted to an assistant athletic director’s position. In addition to his athletic training duties, he assisted with fundraising initiatives, developed community outreach projects and supervised the student-athlete advisory committee, among other tasks.
His primary responsibilities as head athletic trainer at Hampden-Sydney included working with the football and men’s basketball teams. He also hired and supervised a staff of assistants and interns.
Prior to his time at Hampden-Sydney, he was a graduate assistant athletic trainer from 2002-04 at Illinois State University.
McPherson is a certified athletic trainer (ATC) and an approved clinical instructor (ACI). He has been a CPR/AED instructor for the American Heart Association as well. He is a member of athletic training associations at the state of Virginia, mid-Atlantic and national levels.
He earned an undergraduate degree in athletic training from Arkansas State in 2002. He earned a master’s degree in kinesiology and recreation, with emphasis in exercise physiology, in 2004.
McPherson and his wife, Catherine, have three girls – Alley (5), Kendall (2) and Mary Cate (1).
