CLEMSON, SC — Nickolai Nielsen defeated Kevin Galloway at number five singles 6-2, 6-2 in clinching the match and leading Maryland to a 4-3 win over Clemson in an Atlantic Coast Conference men’s tennis match at Clemson, SC Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Maryland improves to 10-7 overall, and 2-6 in the ACC. Clemson falls to 13-15 overall and 1-7 in league play.
Clemson won the doubles point after winning the number two and three positions. Rok Bizjak and Ike Belk clinched the doubles point for the Tigers with an 8-6 win over Andrew Orban and David Kwon at number two doubles.
Maryland tied the score 1-1 when Kwon defeated Kevin Fleck 6-3, 6-1. Orban of Maryland defeated Gera Boryachinskiy 6-3, 6-2 to give the Terps a 2-1 advantage. The score again was tied at 2-2 when Belk of Clemson defeated Boris Fetbroyt 6-4, 6-4.
Michael Coleman gave Maryland a 3-2 lead when he defeated Tino Elgner 6-3, 6-2 at number six singles.
Carlos Alvarez tied the match for Clemson as he defeated Amit Inbar at number one singles 5-7, 7-6, 6-3.
Nielsen clinched the match for the Terrapins with his win over Galloway.
Clemson will play host to Charleston Southern later this evening and will play host to Boston College at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday. The Tigers will also play Coker at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
