The Clemson women’s basketball team will compete in the fourth annual Russell Athletic Shootout on Sunday, an ACC-SEC showdown held at the Gwinnett Center in Duluth, GA. The Lady Tigers face the #18 Georgia Lady Bulldogs at approximately 3:20 PM. The game will follow Georgia Tech-Arkansas, which tips off the event at 1:00 PM.
The game will be televised by the regional sports network, which includes Fox Sports Net South, Comcast Sports Net, and the Sunshine Network. Calling the action will be Mike Hogewood and Debbie Antonelli, with Jenn Hildreth as sideline reporter.
Clemson carries a 7-15 overall record into its final non-conference game of the season. The Lady Tigers have lost nine straight after opening the ACC slate with a 78-65 win over the Wolfpack of N.C. State. Clemson lost 82-61 last time out to #24 Florida State. However, shooting guard Tasha Phillips was a bright spot in the game for Clemson. She played just 11 minutes, but scored 19 points and hit 5-7 from three-point range. It marked the first time since the Virginia game on January 16 she reached double figures.
D’Lesha Lloyd, a freshman from Columbia, SC, now leads the team in scoring at 9.4 points per game. Although she struggled at Florida State, she is averaging double figures during ACC play this year. She also has hit 13 of her last 30 three-point attempts.
Julie Talley, another junior guard, has been shooting the ball well lately. The 5-6 Talley has hit seven of her last nine attempts, and now has made 93 in her career as a Lady Tiger. She needs just one to tie Nuria Forns for sixth place on Clemson’s all-time three-point goals made list.
Georgia sits at 19-6 overall and ranked 18th in the country, according to both national polls. The Lady Bulldogs feature a fantastic freshman post player in Tasha Humphrey. She averages 19.0 points and 8.3 rebounds per game to lead Georgia in both categories. She also has contributed 30 blocked shots this year.
Cori Chambers (12.9) and Sherill Baker (11.3) are Georgia’s other double-figure scorers. Baker is also tops on the team with 64 steals.
For the year, Georgia is shooting 43.9 percent from the field while limiting opponents to just 37.8 percent. The Lady Bulldogs hold a +5.0 rebounding margin over their opponents as well.
