CLEMSON, SC – Head Women’s Basketball Coach Itoro Coleman announced on Thursday the signing of the fifth member of the 2011 freshman class. Deja Hawkins, a 6-3 post player from Riverdale Baptist High in Upper Marlboro, MD, signed her letter of intent in the late signing period, which started on April 13.
“We are very excited to have Deja join the Clemson family,” said Coleman. “Deja has a great work ethic which will allow her to excel academically and athletically.”
Clemson’s 2011 class was ranked as the 33rd-best in the nation in the early signing period, and the addition of Hawkins should help that as well. Hawkins is rated as a three-star prospect by ESPN Hoopgurlz, and earned a grade of 87 on a scale of 100 by the same service.
Hawkins’ Riverdale Baptist team went 30-5 in her senior season, and finished as the 10th-ranked team in the Powerade Fab50 team rankings for the 2010-11 season, and they participated in the ESPNRise National High School Invitational.
“What makes Deja so effective on the court is her presence and physicality in the post. She has great hands, which will allow her to make quick moves to the basket. She also has the ability to pass the ball, especially out of a double team.”
Hawkins also participated as part of the Private School team of the Maryland All-Star Showcase in March.
Hawkins joins four-star post player Natiece Ford, three-star guards Nikki Dixon and Chelsea Lindsay, and Kelly Gramlich as Clemson’s five-member freshman class.
