ATHENS, GA – The Clemson women’s track and field team set 12 season-best marks at the 2004 Spec Towns Invitational hosted by the University of Georgia on Saturday. The Lady Tigers’ Silja Ulfarsdottir, 4x100m relay, Sara Young and Gisele Oliveira each turned in regional qualifying marks. Ulfarsdottir ran a season-best 53.70 in the 400m dash, then ran lead-off on the Lady Tigers’ 400m relay team that recorded a season-best 45.37. Shakirah Rutherford, Randi Hinton and Jessica Cousins were the other members of that relay team. In the field events, Young cleared 12’3.5″ in the pole vault, her second-best qualifying mark of the season. Oliveira posted a mark of 19’8.25″ in the long jump to qualify for the region meet.
Silja Ulfarsdottir claimed the 400m dash with her qualifying time of 53.70, and Sudati Masasu and Patrice McMillan each recorded season-best efforts in the 800m with times of 2:12.05 and 2:13.15, respectively. Casey Phillips placed fourth in the 1500m run with a time of 4:41.45. Jelyn Quick was the runner-up among collegiate competitors in the 100m hurdles, crossing the finish line in 14.11. The Lady Tigers’ 4x100m relay team of Ulfarsdottir, Rutherford, Hinton and Cousins improved its season-best time to 45.37.
In the field events, Sara Young was a regional qualifier in the pole vault with her mark of 12’3.5″, good for second among collegiate competition. Oliveira was the runner-up in the long jump with her mark of 19’8.25″ and Della Clark threw 44’10.25″ in the shot put, finishing seventh in the event. Krystal Woods led the Lady Tigers in the discus throw with a mark of 138’6″ and Clark led Clemson in the hammer throw with her season-best of 161’3″. Woods had a mark of 117’2″ in the javelin to finish third among collegiate competitors.
The Clemson women’s track and field team returns to action Apr. 16-17 in Chapel Hill, NC, as the Lady Tigers compete in the 2004 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
