Lady Tiger Cross Country to Compete at FSU Invitational Saturday

Sept. 16, 2005

The Clemson women’s cross country team travels to Tallahassee, FL this weekend to compete in the FSU Invitational at Miccosukee Greenway Park. The event, hosted by Florida State, will give Clemson a look at the same course that will play host to the ACC Championship on October 31. The women’s event will start Saturday at 8:10 AM and will cover a distance of 5K.

In total, 19 collegiate women’s teams are expected to compete. Included in the field will be Auburn, Bethune-Cookman, Embry-Riddle, Florida, Florida A&M, Florida Atlantic, Florida Southern, Florida Tech, Georgia Tech, Jacksonville, North Florida, Saint Leo, Tampa, Texas A&M, Troy State, UCF, and Webber International.

Clemson will travel with eight to compete in the event, led by seniors Jennifer Barton and Casey Phillips. The duo finished 1-2 to open the season two weeks ago at the Gamecock Invitational. Then, last weekend, Barton placed ninth and Phillips 17th to help the Lady Tigers to a third-place finish at the Clemson Invitational. Barton won the S.C. Collegiate title, however.

Also traveling will be Thea Dix and Patrice McMillan, who competed in the first two events for Clemson as well. Joining them will be a group of four freshmen, three of which (Lauren Marriott, Sunday Ford, Candice Johnson) have competed in both events so far this season. Added to the travel roster this week was Ashley Robinson, who ran 19:27 last weekend to finish 27th out of 118 runners.

Following this weekend’s event, the Lady Tigers will next compete in the Furman Invitational on October 8.
