Clemson, SC — Crystal Starling’s buzzer-beating jump shot lifted Premier Players to a 68-67 win over Clemson in preseason women’s basketball action on Sunday, November 9 at Littlejohn Coliseum.
The Lady Tigers were led by senior guard Lakeia Stokes, who recorded a double-double with 22 points and 11 boards. Senior forward Maggie Slosser added 19 points in a game that featured eight lead changes and 11 score ties.
Clemson took the lead going into intermission, 39-37. The Lady Tigers shot 50 percent from the field in the first half (17-34), to Premier Players’ 41.4 percent. Clemson out rebounded their opponents 20-14 in the first half.
The Lady Tigers trailed most of the second half, until sophomore forward Khaili Sanders hit a turn-around jumper with 8.8 seconds remaining to give Clemson a 67-66 advantage. Then, after calling a timeout with 2.1 seconds, Premier Players’ Crystal Starling hit an eight-foot jump shot from the right side as time expired to clinch the victory.
Premier Players were led by Mary Cofield, who tallied 18 points and four rebounds. Jessica Gaspar led the team in rebounding with nine.
“I thought Lakeia Stokes played exceptionally well,” said Clemson Head Coach Maggie Slosser both played with great effort. We never really found our offensive rhythm, which is to be expected in the early going. We’ve just got to play a little better as a team.”
The Lady Tigers open the regular season on November 21, 2003 as they play host to South Carolina at Littlejohn Coliseum. Tip-off is slated for 8:30 PM.
