Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach Itoro Coleman writes to the Tiger women’s basketball team about her experiences playing for Nigeria at the 2006 FIBA World Basketball Championships. Nigeria will face China on Thursday at 6:45 pm.
Hey Gang,
Greetings form Brazil!
I just got back from dinner. I had some time to digest what just happened. Let me see if I can sum it up for you.
We played USA and lost 79-46. Just like the last game we got off to a horrible start! I think at one point the score was 24-1, USA. By halftime we had cut the lead to 15. USA only scored 37 points in the first half. USA is a powerhouse! To only hold them to 37 points was an accomplishment for us. (You have to celebrate the little victories (smile)). Personally, I played a little better today. I had 15 points. I was 4-6 from three-point land going against Sue Bird and Alana Beard (WHAT A BACKCOURT!). I wish that I could enjoy it a little better. Oh well, that game is over and we have to start to prepare for China.
I’ve been checking China out on the tube. They have a lot of shooters on their team. They lost to USA by 47 and they lost to Russia by 20. We have to win one game to get out of our bracket. I know that China will want to win as much as we do. It all comes down to who wants it more.
We play China tomorrow [Thursday] at 6:45 pm. Hopefully, when I give you an update, we will have won our first game.
I am so proud of our soccer team. Way to represent! Good luck to the football team against FSU! I’ll be cheering for you on Saturday!
Until next time, take care and GO TIGERS!
Coach Coleman
