Indoor Track & Field Season Underway for Clemson Men

Clemson, SC – Travis Padgett’s automatic NCAA qualifying time in the 60m dash highlighted day one for the men’s track & field team at the Clemson Opener. The defending national champion in the event, Padgett easily outran the competition in the opening heat Friday evening to a time of 6.62 seconds. He will likely sit out Saturday’s final.

Freshman sprinter Trenton Guy also posted a strong time in the 60m dash. The Charlotte, NC product ran a 6.71, an NCAA provisional qualifying effort, and won his prelim. Gwantaveus Anderson posted a 6.88 to qualify for Saturday’s final. Kendall Millhouse, also a freshman, ran a 6.91 in his first collegiate action. The 60m finals will be Saturday at 11:20 AM.

The distance medley relay team of Jasen Turnbull, Cowin Mills, Andrew Porter, and Chris Slate won in easy fashion. Turnbull, a freshman from Northville, MI, got the team off to a strong start in the 1200m leg. Slate, also a freshman, ran away with it in the anchor leg to give the Tigers a time of 10:23.36.

In the high hurdles, Mike Feathers had a time of 8.47 and was 11th in the prelims. Brandon Carter of Shelby, NC posted a time of 8.76 in his first-ever collegiate race. Both qualified for Saturday’s final.

Josh Fowler red-shirted the 2006-07 season after an injury but returned to action Friday night in the long jump. The Dorman High School product was eighth with a mark of 22’2.5″. Miller Moss (20’9.75″) and Feathers (20’7.75″) also competed in the long jump.

John Oberg was runner-up in the first flight of the pole vault. The red-shirt freshman cleared 14’7.25″. Mitch Greeley, two-time All-American in the vault, will compete Saturday in the second flight at 1:00 PM.

Zach Berg returned to action following an injury-plagued 2006-07 season. He was runner-up in the weight throw with a mark of 58’6″. Alex Padgett, a red-shirt freshman from Rock Hill, SC, was fifth (53’5″).

The Tigers return to action Saturday for the completion of the indoor opener. The first running event will be the 60m hurdles final at 11:00 AM. The high jump and shot put will also get underway at that time.
