Howard Named Academic All-ACC

CLEMSON, S.C. – Senior diver Emily Howard was named to the All-ACC Academic Swimming and Diving Team, announced by ACC Commissioner John Swofford on Wednesday. She is first member of the women’s diving program to receive the honor.

Howard was a standout both in and out of the pool this season. The 2013-14 team captain set both the one-meter and three-meter school records with scores of 295.40 and 312.30, respectively. She led the Tigers in competition points with 163 and finished first overall in an event nine times this season to lead the team.

Howard earned ACC Female Diver-of-the-Week honors on Feb. 11, becoming the first Clemson diver to receive the honor. She recorded an NCAA Zones qualifying score six times in the one-meter diving and four times in the three-meter, most by any Tiger. In addition, she recorded three of the top five scores this season, regardless of event.

The native of Newtown, Pa., qualified for NCAA Zones in both the one-meter and three-meter events for the second straight year. She received the Coleman MVP Award for the second straight season and had the highest point total on the team for both the one-meter and three-meter events this season.

Out of the pool, Howard was recently inducted in to the prestigious Phi Betta Kappa honor society and was one of three Clemson student-athletes to earn an ACC Postgraduate Scholarship earlier this year.  For her work in community service, she was named the student recipient of the Martin Luther King Jr. Excellence in Service Award.

Howard received the Outstanding Undergraduate Award by the President’s Commission on the Status of Women for improving the status of women. She received the Eugene Galluscio Award For Undergraduate Leadership Recipient, which is given by the psychology department faculty to a student that demonstrates academic achievement and leadership. Howard also served as Vice President of the Clemson Student-Athlete Advisory Committee this year.

Howard was named to the President’s List for the third time this past Fall and also been named to the Dean’s List three times. She is a two-time member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll as well.

The psychology major is on track to graduate in May and will attend graduate school in order to pursue a career as a sports psychologist.
