Hepburn Breaks Record As Clemson Defeats Winthrop At Carolina Classic

COLUMBIA, SC – Danielle Hepburn posted her 450th career block assist during the second set of Clemson’s 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-19) win over Winthrop in the Carolina Challenge on Friday afternoon to break Cindy Stern’s school record. The senior from Miami, FL had five total blocks in the contest as Clemson held the Eagles to a .099 hitting percentage. The Tigers will take on South Carolina at the Volleyball Competition Facility at 7:30 tonight and will face the College of Charleston on Saturday.

Lia Proctor led Clemson (5-2) in kills for the fifth straight match with 14, while Hepburn added 10 for a .444 hitting percentage.

The Tigers struggled in the beginning of the match and the Eagles led for much of the first set. Clemson finally pulled ahead, 14-13, after kills by Brittany Fennell and Jeannette Abbott and a Fennell block. The Tigers then scored the final six points of the set on Proctor’s serve for the 25-17 win.

Hepburn recorded her third block assist of the day, giving her sole possession of the record, to put Clemson on top by a 15-7 margin in set two. With the Tigers up by 10, Winthrop recorded seven of the next nine points to narrow the margin to 22-17. A kill by Lacy Hayes returned the serve to Clemson and a Hepburn kill sealed the victory (25-17).

The Tigers then led for the entire third set, thanks to a five-point run to open the frame. The lead hit seven at 14-7 before the Eagles limited Clemson’s rallies to just two of back-to-back points. However, they were unable to put together any significant runs of their own and the Tigers won on a powerful Proctor kills.

Kelley Taylor had nine kills to lead the Winthrop (3-4) offense, while Kellie Sellers and Janice Rivera each tallied nine kills.
