Helwagen Leads Tigers in 3-Meter Prelims at NCAA Zone Championships

ATHENS, Ga. – Junior Megan Helwagen led the Tigers’ in the preliminary round of the three-meter event at the NCAA Zone B Regional Championships on Monday at Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Ga. Helwagen placed 23rd in the event, missing a berth in the finals by just five places, as the top 18 divers advance in each event.

Helwagen scored 265.25 points in the prelims to take 23rd place, which was her highest finish in the three-meter at the NCAA Zone meet in three career tries. The Mason, Ohio native bested her previous-high finish of 32nd place recorded at the 2013 Zone Championships. The 23rd-place finish was also the second highest among all NCAA Zone events for Helwagen, as her top finish remains 18th, a mark recorded in the platform event at the 2013 competition.

Sophomore Sarah Braun was second among Tiger divers in the three-meter, finishing 32nd with 242.40 points. Two freshmen, Allison Brophy and Hannah Donovan, competed in their first career NCAA Zone meet and finished with 226.70 and 212.95 points, respectively.

The competition continues on Tuesday, March 10 with the one-meter. Braun, Brophy, Donovan and Helwagen will be joined by senior Jessica Doolittle in the event prelims. The meet concludes Wednesday, March 11 with the platform. Live results will be available on DiveMeets.com.
