Clemson guard Cliff Hammonds was named ACC CO-Rookie of the Week on Monday, the third time this year he has been honored by the ACC. Hammonds has now tied the Clemson record for ACC Rookie of the Week selections, joining Tree Rollins (1973-74), Skip Wise (1974-75), Grayson Marshall (1984-85) and Greg Buckner (1994-95) as three-time selections.
Hammonds averaged 14.0 points and 4.5 rebounds in a pair of league games. A 6-3, 175-pound freshman from Cairo, Ga., Hammonds had 17 points, four assists and three rebounds against NC State and 11 points and six rebounds versus Miami.
North Carolina’s Marvin Williams was the other Rookie of the Week selection. Williams had his first career “double-double” with 15 points and 10 rebounds in just 16 minutes of action in Saturday’s 110-76 win at Virginia. The Bremerton, Wash., freshman was six-of-eight from the floor, including a career-high three-of-three from three-point range.
Wake Forest’s Eric Williams had back-to-back “double-doubles” last week, averaging 25.5 points and 11.5 rebounds in games against Georgia Tech and Miami. He was named the ACC Player of the Week. The 6-9, 291-pound junior opened the week with a 27-point, 12-rebound performance in a 102-101 loss to the 22nd-ranked Yellow Jackets. Two days later, the Wake Forest, N.C. junior had 23 points and 11 rebounds in a 94-82 win over the Hurricanes. For the week, Williams was 20-of-26 (.769) from the field.
