Glover Has Two Shot Lead Entering Final Round of Zurich New Orleans Open

NEW ORLEANS, LA – Two former Clemson golfers will be in the final pairing on the final day of a PGA Tour event for the first time on Sunday when Lucas Glover and Kyle Stanley compete for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Glover has a two shot lead at 14 under par after two rounds, two shots better than four players, including Stanley.

Glover has had rounds of 67-65-70 for his 202 total, while Stanley shot a 65 on Saturday after rounds of 72-67 to open the event and stands at 204.

Glover, Stanley and Jimmy Walker will be in the final group on Sunday and will begin off the first tee at 9:01 AM Central time. Tee times have been moved up due to the threat of afternoon showers. The tournament will be shown tape delayed by CBS.

This will be the first time two former Clemson golfers have been paired together in the final group of the final round of a PGA Tour event. Two years ago, Glover and former Clemson All-American Jonathan Byrd finished in a tie at the end of regulation at the Wells Fargo in Charlotte and Glover won the playoff. But, Glover and Byrd were not in the final pairing during regulation play of the final round.

Glover was an All-American at Clemson between 1997-2001. He helped the Tigers to four top 10 NCAA finishes, including a second-place in 1998 and 2001. Stanley was an All-American for the Tigers between 2006-09. He finished second at the NCAA National Tournament as a freshman and a junior. The Clemson team finished fifth in the nation during his sophomore year, 2008.

Stanley finished his Clemson career with a 71.63 stroke average, still second in Clemson history behind D.J. Trahan, while Glover is still fourth in school history with a 71.95 stroke average. Stanley is third in school history in percentage of rounds at par or better (.620), while Glover is fourth at .585. Glover had 28 career rounds in the 60s at Clemson, while Stanley had 27.

Both golfers have been struggling with the putter so far this year, but have done well in that area this week. Stanley was 184th on the PGA Tour in strokes gained putting entering this week’s event, while Glover was 182nd.

Glover will be seeking his fourth PGA Tour victory. He won the 2009 US Open, the first former Tiger to win a Major. Stanley will be seeking his second. He won the Waste Management Invitational in Phoenix last year a week after he finished second in a playoff at the Farmers Insurance Classic in San Diego.

If Glover or Stanley win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans it would mean a Clemson golfer has won at least one PGA Tour event 10 consecutive years. The only schools with streaks that long are UNLV and Arizona State.
