Four freshmen combined to pitch eight shutout innings and drive in three runs to lead #19 Clemson to a 4-0 win over Charlotte on Saturday in front of 5,681 fans at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The Tigers improved to 2-0 and the 49ers fell to 0-2.
Freshman Chris Dwyer (1-0), who made his first career appearance, pitched 6.2 innings and allowed only two hits with one walk and nine strikeouts. Dwyer had seven strikeouts through only three innings, including six consecutive from the first to the third inning. Andrew Smith (0-1) took the loss for Charlotte, as he allowed one run over 6.0 innings on five hits, one walk, and three strikeouts.
With the game scoreless entering the bottom of the sixth, Addison Johnson, Mike Freeman moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt. Ben Paulsen followed with a groundout to second to score Stolz and give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
With one out in the top of the seventh, Rob Lyerly hit a single to right and Zane Williams reached on an error. Kevin Brady, making his first career appearance, relieved Dwyer and retired Corey Shaylor to end the Charlotte threat.
Jeff Schaus started a Clemson rally in the seventh with a one-out walk and Brad Miller followed with a single. Freshman pinch-hitter Richard Mounce then slapped his first career hit, a double to right field, to score Schaus and extend the Tiger lead to 2-0.
Paulsen opened the bottom of the eighth with a walk. Kyle Parker sacrificed Paulsen to second and Wilson Boyd was intentionally walked. Schaus grounded the ball back to pitcher Bryan Hamilton and Hamilton’s throw to second was low, allowing all runners to reach safely. Miller then drove in Paulsen and Boyd on a single to center to extend Clemson’s lead to 4-0.
Brady also made his Tiger debut and pitched 1.1 innings and allowed one hit.
The Tigers were led at the plate by Brad Miller who was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Charlotte was led by Rob Lyerly (3-for-4).
Clemson, who leads the series 2-0, will conclude the series with Charlotte on Sunday at 1:00 PM.
