Freshman Trio to Compete at U.S. Junior Nationals

June 18, 2007

Clemson, SC – A trio of freshmen from the men’s track & field team will compete at this week’s USA Junior Championships in Indianapolis, IN. The meet will be held Wednesday through Sunday at the Michael A. Carroll Stadium in conjunction with the senior nationals. Miller Moss, Alex Padgett, and Chris Spear qualified from Clemson’s squad.

Moss red-shirted this season and will compete in the decathlon. A Sumter, SC native, he was a two-time state MVP at the SCISA (South Carolina Independent Schools Association) level. He earned his qualifying mark of 6,476 points at the Tiger Multi-Event Open as an unattached athlete this spring. The decathlon will start Wednesday with the 100m dash at 1:00 PM. Thursday’s action is slated to start with the high hurdles at 10:00 AM.

Padgett also red-shirted the 2007 season after coming to Clemson from Fort Mill High School. He was the state champion in the shot put in 2006, but he will be competing this week in the hammer throw. Padgett’s qualifying mark was a throw of 162’6″. His competition is scheduled for 10:15 AM on Friday, June 22.

Spear competed as a first-year freshman for the Tigers in 2007. He cleared 16’9.5″ at the ACC Indoor Championships and finished fourth in his first-ever conference meet. He already ranks fourth in school history on the indoor pole vault performance list. Spear will compete Thursday at 5:15 PM.
