The fourth volume of the Be a T.I.G.E.R.! Newspaper is in circulation with over 10,000 copies in print. The newspaper is created entirely by student-athletes and is a supplement of the Be a T.I.G.E.R.! character education program. T.I.G.E.R. is an acronym that stands for teamwork, integrity, gratitude, education and respect.
The newspaper has a superhero theme that likens the T.I.G.E.R. traits to superpowers. Throughout the newspaper, stories of the Tiger’s struggles with his nemesis Cocky bring to light the power of teamwork, education and respect. A tempting situation presents him the opportunity to demonstrate integrity, while his partnership with the Tiger Cub helps him to realize the value of expressing gratitude. The newspaper also contains games, challenges and personal messages from athletes that share how they use their `superpowers’ in their sport and everyday life.
A staff of eight student-athletes assembled the newspaper from start to finish. Staff members served as writers, reporters, artists and graphic designers. The members of the staff include Michelle Nance (rowing), Jenn Agee (rowing), Bethanie Wachna (track and field), Sarah Smith (swimming and diving), Darius Acker (track and field), Caitlin O’Neill (rowing), Harry Foster (swimming and diving) and Jackie Lauer (track and field).
