CLEMSON, SC – Five members of the Clemson women’s track and field team will compete at the 2004 USA Junior Track and Field Championships to be held June 25-27. All five Lady Tigers making the trip to College Station were freshmen on the Lady Tigers’ 2004 squad. Della Clark, Jessica Cousins, Patrice McMillan, Christina Smith and Sara Young each turned in qualifying performances during the 2004 season. This year’s world qualifying meet will be held on the campus of Texas A&M at the Frank G. Anderson Track and Field Complex in College Station, TX. The top two finishers in each event will qualify to represent Team USA at the World Junior Championships to be held July 13-18 in Grosseto, Italy.
Della Clark will compete in two events at this weekend. The native of Acworth, GA, will contest the hammer throw and shot put. Clark enters the competition with a qualifying mark of 44’10.25″ in the shot put and 176’4″ in the hammer throw. She advanced to the East Region Championships in the hammer throw, and ranks second on Clemson’s all-time list in that event. The finals of the shot put are scheduled for 4:30 PM on Sunday, June 27, and the finals of the hammer throw will be contested at 2:45 PM on Saturday, June 26.
Jessica Cousins, from Seneca, SC, will compete in the 400m dash. She enters this weekend’s meet with a qualifying time of 55.47 set at the Orange & Purple Classic held in May. Cousins was a member of the Lady Tigers’ ACC Champion 4x400m relay team that advanced to the NCAA Championships. She will compete in the preliminaries of the 400m at 6:45 PM on Friday, June 25, and the finals are slated for Saturday, June 26 at 7:20 PM.
A native of Brookfield, WI, Patrice McMillan will represent Clemson in the 800m run. She owns a qualifying time of 2:13.15 set at the Spec Towns Invitational in April. McMillan will compete in the qualifying round of the 800m run at 4:50 PM on Friday, June 25, with the finals scheduled for 6:42 PM on Saturday, June 26.
Christina Smith, a rising sophomore from Philadelphia, PA, will compete in the 400m hurdles. Smith competed at the 2004 NCAA Championships and the East Region Championships in the 400m hurdles and as a member of the Lady Tigers’ 4x400m relay team. She enters the USA Junior competition with a qualifying time of 58.43, a mark that ranks third on Clemson’s all-time list in the intermediate hurdles. The qualifying round of the 400m hurdles is slated for 5:15 PM on Friday, June 25, with the finals on Saturday, June 26 at 6:18 PM.
Sara Young will represent the Lady Tigers in the pole vault. Young, from Laurens, SC,owns a qualifying mark of 12’8.25″ set in her victory at the NC-SC All-Star meet in April. She ranks third on the Clemson all-time list in the pole vault with that mark, and competed at the 2004 East Region Championships. Young will compete in the pole vault finals on Sunday, June 27, at 3:45 PM.
