CLEMSON, SC – Emily Howard, a rising senior and a member of the Clemson diving team participated in the United State Diving Zone B National Preliminary competition in Tallahassee, FL this past weekend.
Howard competed at the meet in the one-meter event on July 19th and in the three-meter event on July 20. This was a qualifying meet for the 2013 AT&T National Diving Championships.
Howard finished 21st in the preliminaries on the one-meter board and finished 13th in the preliminaries and advanced to the finals in the three-meter competition. In the three-meter finals she finished 13th but increased her preliminary score from 210.25 to 211.35 in the finals.
The format of the meet for both one and three meter diving at this event is that the divers compete 5 optional dives, one from each category (as opposed to collegiate diving in which they compete six optional dives). When they make it to finals, they compete the same five optional dives again starting from scratch with no scores from preliminaries carrying over to the finals.
“Emily has been working hard all summer to get out of her comfort zone to allow her to make tremendous technical and movement pattern changes to her diving,” said Clemson Head Diving Coach Leslie Hasselbach Adams.
“Getting out of your comfort zone is not an easy thing to do, and Emily has done an excellent job of keeping her mind open making those crucial changes. Our focus for success at the National Preliminary meet was to aim for her to perform those changes she has made time and time again in practice and continue those changes in a meet situation.
“Emily successfully completed her mission and was able to compete like she has been practicing. This allowed her to make the finals in the three meter event. I could not be more proud of her accomplishments. I believe that she has learned a great deal about herself from this experience. Emily has set herself up for a successful senior campaign.”
