CLEMSON, SC – A record-tying eight Clemson athletic programs posted team GPAs of over 3.0 and the department’s 434 student-athletes had a combined 2.99 GPA, also tied for the best on record, according to data released by the University’s Office of Institutional Research.
Leading the way was the women’s diving program with a 3.58 GPA. The women’s tennis (3.38) and rowing (3.34) programs were among the top academically as well after finishing in the top 20 of their respective final sports polls.
Other women’s programs that were over the 3.0 mark were the women’s soccer (3.30) and volleyball (3.01) teams. It was the 26th consecutive semester of at least a 3.0 GPA for the women’s soccer program, the longest active streak in the department.
In terms of the men’s sports, the tennis program had the top mark with a 3.31. That program also had a top-25 finish on the court and made a second-round NCAA Tournament appearance. The golf team posted a 3.12 GPA, the fourth consecutive semester of at least 3.0 for that program. All nine golfers were named to the academic honor roll, the first time every golfer had made at least a 3.0 in the same semester. The men’s soccer program had a 3.03 GPA.
The Clemson baseball team had a strong 2.95, while the men’s basketball program was at 2.72 and the football team posted a 2.60. Thirty members of the Tiger football team posted at least a 3.0, and the 2.60 team GPA was the fourth-best on record.
“The just-completed spring semester saw our student-athletes record an overall GPA of 2.99, tying for the highest mark in school history,” said Steve Duzan, associate athletic director for academic services. “With eight teams posting a 3.0 or higher, it underscores our commitment to the development of the total person.”
“Off the field, all 19 teams participated in community service and were proud to give back to the community. We believe these are all very important components of a comprehensive athletic program.”
An even 200 of the 434 student-athletes were named to the academic honor roll (at least a 3.0 GPA) for the semester. The rowing program had the most selections with 47.
