Chris Hutchins, Boiling Springs, S.C.

Are you in favor of adding schools to the Atlantic Coast Conference and having southern and northern divisions? If not, why, and if so, what schools, in your oppinion, would be a good fit?

Bobby Robinson’s Answer

The answer is yes and no. I am not really adamant about expansion. I like the fact that we are a playing conference in every sport. Which means that all teams that have round robins, we play everybody in a round robin in volleyball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, those type of things. We play everybody in football and baseball. We play everybody in every sport, really. When you go to divisions and add a lot of schools you really cannot do that. You start not playing certain people certain years. That to me, I don’t really like. To be honest with you, it is something that we would look at. If we thought it was in our long-term best interest for Clemson and the Atlantic Coast Conference we would have no problem in expanding. We are not convinced of that right now. The landscape changes on a daily basis and that could happen again. If it did happen (expansion), I would rather go to 12 than 10. If you do go to 12, I think the northern and southern division would be the answer to that.

Regarding schools, there would be a lot of schools that would be good fits, but to be honest with you, I don’t think it is real appropriate for me to start talking about specific schools because that leads credits to certain things and I am not sure they would have any interest in the ACC and I am not sure as a conference we would have interest in whoever I would name. From that point of view, we will shy away from answering that part of it.
