Diving Opens 2014 at Georgia Invite on Friday

CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson women’s diving team will travel to Athens, GA to compete in the Georgia Invite beginning Friday and concluding on Sunday. It will be the third invitational of the season for the Tigers and their first ever appearance in the Georgia Invite.

Earlier this season, the Tigers split the squad to compete in the Georgia Tech Invitational and the Pittsburgh Invitational. Chelsea Uranaka set the Clemson record at an invitational with a 291.30 in the three-meter event at the Georgia Tech Invitational to qualify for NCAA Zones. Georgia native Tabitha Banks recorded a 243.50 in the one-meter in that same meet to advance to the finals and finish ninth overall. Overall, five different Tigers advanced to the finals in either the one-meter or three-meter events between the two meets.

In their last outing, Clemson defeated rival South Carolina 25-13 on December 18, 2013, in the first meeting between the two schools in diving. Chelsea Uranaka won the three-meter event with a NCAA Zones qualifying score of 287.55. Sarah Braun recorded a score of 223.00 in the platform event, second-best platform score in school history.

So far this season three Tigers have earned bids to the NCAA Zone Championships. Emily Howard has qualified for Zones in both the one-meter and three-meter events. Jessica Resler qualified for the first time of her career after recording a 223.00 in the platform event against UNC Wilmington. The score is currently the Clemson record for platform diving. Uranaka has also qualified for NCAA Zones with a pair of qualifying scores in the three-meter event.

The event will feature one-meter diving on Friday, three-meter diving on Saturday and will conclude with the platform dives on Sunday. Competition is set to begin at 11:00 AM each day with the prelims to be followed by the finals later in the day.
