Cross Country Teams Compete in Clemson Opener

December 5, 1998

CLEMSON, S.C. – Defending NCAA Champion Shawn Crawford won two events to lead the Clemson men’s track team in the Clemson Opener. Tiger athletes won five of the 12 events in the 15-team meet, as Bob Pollock’s team began the indoor track season. The Tigers hope to improve on their number-three NCAA finish of last season.

Crawford, who won the NCAA indoor 200 meter championship last season, won the 60 meters and the 300 meters at the event held in Littlejohn Coliseum. His 6.72 time in the 60 was an NCAA provisional time. He was the only double winner for the meet.

Davidson Gill paced Clemson to a one-two finish in the 500 meters. His 1:02.14 winning time is second on the school’s all-time performers list. Freshman Ato Modibo, the indoor and outdoor high school national champion last year, finished second in the event with a time of 103.11, a time that is third on Clemson’s all-time performers list. Esteban Diaz captured the 3000 meters with a time of 8:25.70, his all-time best in the event.

Doug Ameigh led the field events competitors when he won the high jump with a leap of 6-9. That was just one inch off the personal best for the freshman.
