Corbin Mills Defeated at U.S. Amateur

CLEMSON, SC – Clemson junior Corbin Mills was defeated by Jack Senior (England) 6 & 4 on Thursday morning in the first round of match play at the U.S. Amateur at Erin Hills, near Milwaukee, WI.

The loss put an end to Mills’ attempt to become just the third player in the history of amateur golf to win both the U.S. Public Links and the U.S. Amateur in the same year. The only players to do it are Ryan Moore (2004) and Colt Knost (2007).

Mills won the U.S. Public Links in July by winning six consecutive matches, including the championship in 37 holes over Derek Ernst of UNLV. It was Mills’ first match play championship, so Thursday was his first career loss in match play.

Mills had advanced to match play with a career-best round of 64 on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. The round had moved him from 167th place to 19th in the stroke play qualifier.

Mills, a native of Easley, SC, quickly went one up against Senior with a birdie on the par-five opening hole. But, Senior then won six of the next nine holes to take a commanding five-up lead after 10 holes.

Mills will now return to Clemson and wait to hear if he is selected for the United States Walker Cup team, which will be announced early next week.
