Cocco Punches Ticket to Austin as Tigers Earn Seven Entries in Quarterfinals

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — On the first day of competition at the NCAA East Regional Prelims meet, six Tigers earned seven total entries in the national quarterfinals. Ethan Cocco secured a trip to Austin, Texas for Nationals with a mammoth personal best in the javelin, while Wanya McCoy advanced to quarterfinals in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes.  The Clemson men will have nine entries in the quarterfinals on Friday including the seven that earned their spot today and the 4×100 meter and 4×400 meter relays.

Action in the women’s meet will begin on Thursday at 10 a.m. with the hammer throw. The Tigers have 12 entries on the women’s side, nine of which will compete on Thursday.

WEDNESDAY HIGHLIGHTS

• Ethan Cocco shattered his personal best by five meters to set the school record in the javelin throw with a mark of 70.64 meters. Despite entering the meet with the No. 36 mark in the region, Cocco’s school record was the 12th best throw and was just enough to qualify for nationals. He was the only athlete from he first or second flight to punch his ticket to Austin. All three of his attempts would have been personal bests entering Wednesday.
• Giano Roberts advanced in the 110 meter hurdles by running a 13.59, good for second best in his heat and 11th best overall. He’ll compete for the right to go to Nationals on Friday at 6:15 p.m.
• Wanya McCoy advanced in the 100 meter dash by setting a personal best time of 10.10 seconds. That time is good for No. 6 in school history. He also advanced to the quarterfinals of the 200 meter dash with a wind-aided time of 20.27.
• D’Andre Anderson advanced to quarterfinals of the 400 meter dash with a time of 46.45. That was the 16th best time in the field.
• Tarees Rhoden had the best time in the 800 meter run qualifiers (1:48.00) to advance to quarterfinals.
• Aman Thornton finished in the top-3 of his heat to advance to the 800 meter run quarterfinals with a time of 1:49.13. That was the 10th best time in the field of 48.
• Cameron Rose finished in the top-3 of his heat in the 200 meter dash with a time of 20.62. He will compete in the quarterfinals of the event on Friday alongside McCoy.
• Daniel Cope threw a personal best 64.86 meters to improve upon his school record in the hammer throw. He finished 13th in the field despite coming into the meet as the 26th seed.
