Clemson, SC – Clemson junior D.J. Trahan won the Azalea Invitational this past weekend at the Country Club of Charleston with a score of 13-under-par 271. The native of Inman, SC dominated the field winning by eight shots over Jamie Elson.
Trahan had rounds of 69-64-68-70. He took the lead at the end of the second round with his sparkling seven-under-par 64. Only four players in the entire 101 player field shot under-par.
This was an individual amateur tournament so it does not count towards Trahan’s Clemson or college stats, but it will enhance his worldwide amateur ranking. He was ranked fifth in the world heading into the event by Golfweek. Trahan will be back on the course competing for Clemson this weekend when Clemson takes part in the Augusta State Invitational in Augusta, GA.
Trahan was not the only Clemson golfer in the field. Junior Ben Duncan tied for eighth with a 286 score, two-over-par. The much improved Clemson golfer had rounds of 72-68-75-71 in recording a top 10 performance.
Five Clemson players competed in the event and all five made the cut for the final round. Freshman Jack Ferguson finished 37th with a 293 score, while Gregg Jones was tied for 50th at 296. Tripp James, the only senior on the Clemson team, was 62nd with a 301 score.
