Clemson’s Sara Young Wins Pole Vault At Clemson Relays

CLEMSON, SC – By the light of the moon and car headlights, Clemson sophomore Sara Young cleared 12’5.5″ to win the pole vault to highlight Clemson’s performances on day one of the 2005 Clemson Relays. Young, from Laurens, SC, cleared the same height a year ago to claim the pole vault title at the 2004 Clemson Relays. Krystal Woods and Beth Jordan also recorded top-five finishes on the opening day of competition. Woods placed fourth in the javelin with a personal-best mark fo 137’4″, while Jordan cleared 10’11.75″ to tie for fifth in the pole vault.

In the long jump, Jessica Earp posted a mark of 16’3.25″ and Tia Perry had a best mark of 15’9.25″. Christina Moore and Earp also competed in the javelin throw. Moore posted a career-best effort with her mark of 105’3″, while Earp, a multi-event athlete, recorded a mark of 78’11”. Helen Kirkland was the third Lady Tiger to compete in the pole vault, clearing 10’6″.

Other day one event winners included Shaka Dennison (Georgia) in the long jump, Aline Bernard (Vanderbilt) in the 10,000m and Sigrun Fjeldsted (Georgia) in the javelin throw.

The Clemson Relays continues on Saturday morning, with running and field events beginning at 10:00 AM. The meet is being held at the Rock Norman Track and Field Complex on the campus of Clemson University.
