Clemson’s Liane Weber Named ACC Indoor Freshman of the Year

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The 2006-07 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Indoor Track & Field awards were announced today as voted on by the league’s 12 head coaches. Virginia Tech’s Dave Cianelli, who led the Hokies to the conference indoor title this season, earned Coach of the Year honors. Georgia Tech’s Ashlee Kidd was honored for the second consecutive season, being named Track Most Valuable Performer while Miami’s Brenda Faluade earned Field Most Valuable Performer. Clemson’s Liane Weber garnered Freshman of the Year honors.

Dave Cianelli led Virginia Tech to its first women’s and Olympic Sport league title since joining the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2004-05. Under the tutelage of Cianelli, the Hokies tallied 136 points and 10 top-three finishes while claiming three individual event victories in the 60m dash, pole vault and shot put.

Georgia Tech’s Ashlee Kidd was selected as the Track Most Valuable Performer after registering a pair of first-place finishes on the track. The senior sprinter from St. Petersburg Fla., captured the 400m dash for the third time in the last four years crossing the finish line in 53.54. In addition, Kidd won the 200m with a time of 23.75. Her sixth-place 4×4 relay team finished at 3:45.59. Kidd had previously provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship in both the 200m and 400m and is first in the ACC in both events.

Miami’s Brenda Faluade earned Field Most Valuable Performer after two impressive performances in the long jump and the triple jump. Placing first in the triple jump, Faluade’s best leap was 43-11.25, which automatically qualified her for the NCAA Championship. Taking second place in the long jump with a leap of 20-03.50, the senior from Katy, Texas provisionally qualified in that event as well. Faluade is first in the ACC in the triple jump and second in the long jump on the season.

Clemson’s Liane Weber garnered Freshman of the Year honors after setting a new conference meet record in the pentathlon. Miami’s Amber Williams previously held the event’s record with 4028 points in 2005. With 4089 points, the Wangen, Germany native finished first in the meet and met NCAA automatic qualifying standards for her event.
