April 30, 2012

GREENSBORO, NC – Clemson junior catcher Spencer Kieboom has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while NC State’s Anthony Tzamtzis earned Pitcher of the Week honors.

Playing near his hometown of Marietta, Ga., Kieboom went 10-for-15 (.667) with one homer, one double, seven RBI, and four runs to lead the Tigers to a series win at Georgia Tech over the weekend. He totaled at least two hits in all three games at Georgia Tech and raised his batting average 47 points (.230 to .277) in the series. On Saturday, he went 3-for-5 with a grand slam, double, and a career-high five RBIs in Clemson’s 13-7 win. Then on Sunday, he went 5-for-5, as he totaled a career-high five hits and became the first Tiger to tally five hits in a game in 2012. He also accumulated two RBIs and a run in the Tigers’ 11-8 win in the series-finale. On the week, Kieboom was 11-for-20 (.550) with eight RBIs, while he also tallied at least one hit and one run in all four games. On the season, he is hitting .277 with two homers, five doubles, 22 RBIs, 19 runs, and 17 strikeouts against only 10 walks in 41 games (39 starts).

NC State’s Tzamtzis (5-3) struck out a career-high nine batters over a career-long 7 2/3 innings in only his fifth start of the year, holding Duke to two hits and outdueling Blue Devil ace Marcus Stroman to propel No. 19 NC State to a 4-0 win on Friday night. The redshirt sophomore from Miami, Fla., walked five batters in the shutout effort, but did not let a runner past second base on the evening. His nine batters fanned beats his previous career-best of eight, set in his first start of 2012 against Wright State. The win in Friday night’s opener helped key the Wolfpack to a series sweep and allowed them to maintain their hold on second place in the ACC’s Atlantic Division.
