Clemson’s Brent Hobbs In Second Place After Day One Of Clemson Heptathlon Championships

CLEMSON, SC – After day one of the 2005 Clemson Heptathlon Championships, Tiger junior Brent Hobbs is in second place, while fellow Tigers Ryan Koontz and Kyle Shaw stand in sixth and eighth place, respectively. Maurice Smith of Auburn University leads the 17-man field with 3,266 points. Hobbs posted 2,927 points for second place entering the final three events, and Alabama’s Keith Baker is in third place with 2,906 first-day points.

Hobbs opened the meet with a time of 7.22 in the 60m dash, the third-fastest time in the field. He posted a mark of 22’7″ in the long jump, then threw 41’2.25″ in the shot put. In the final event of day one, the high jump, Hobbs cleared 6’2″.

Koontz, a sophomore from Statesboro, GA, recorded 2,697 points. He opened the meet with a time of 7.59 in the 60m dash, then recorded a mark of 20’3.75″ in the long jump. He posted a mark of 36’6.25″ in the shot put, and cleared a meet-best 6’8″ in the high jump for a strong ending to day one.

A sophomore from Three Rivers, MI, Shaw tallied 2,631 day-one points in his Clemson debut. He crossed the finish line in 7.33 in the 60m dash, then recorded a leap of 20’6.25″ in the long jump. He turned in a mark of 39’1.25″ in the shot put and cleared 5’10.5″ in the high jump to round out the first day of competition.

The heptathlon will resume at 11:00 AM with the 60m hurdles, followed by the pole vault at 12:00 PM. The 1000m will conclude competition at 2:00 PM.
